After Hammerson departed, three of the scientists, doctors Alice Benning, Letitia Farrow, and Alfred Linley, stood at the front of the room and continued their discussion.

Only Doctor Lee Huang remained at the table, twirling a ballpoint pen, his eyes fixed on it. "We shouldn't be helping them, you know?" He stopped its spin and looked up. "Because they're all wrong, dead wrong."

The three doctors turned, and Linley smiled. "Who? Who is wrong, Lee?"

"The colonel. The military ... you," Huang replied. "How can anyone truly know the visitors' motives? Their thinking might be so different from ours that we can't even comprehend how they see us."

"But we know what they are doing is wrong. They are harming people," Linley replied. "They either need to stop or be made to stop."

Huang sighed theatrically. "Imagine landing from the stars among a field of animals, say horses, and using some of them to do your laborious work. Our early settlers have done exactly that in many countries."

"But not through irreversible body modification," Doctor Farrow said, her brows knitted.

"If we had their technology three hundred years ago, I'm betting we would have used it," Huang replied, and then held out a hand. "Look, all I'm saying is that we have a race of beings that have perfected interplanetary or interdimensional travel, have medical procedures we can't even fathom, and probably have a hundred other things that would greatly benefit our entire species. If only we could speak to them. Show them who we really are."

"Unfortunately, they've already shown us who they are." Linley shrugged. "The military are involved and it's out of our hands now."

Huang stared at them for a moment, his eyes half-lidded in thought. "Not quite yet," he said softly.
